Why you rank on Google but get no leads from AI assistants
Strong Google rankings but nothing from ChatGPT or Perplexity? The five reasons this happens to good websites, and what to change first.

Rank on Google
Blue links, snippets and maps — and the base layer AI reads from.

One shared foundation: crawlable, structured, trustworthy content — run as a single program.
This one surprises people. A company spends years on SEO, ranks on page one for its main terms, and still never comes up when buyers ask ChatGPT. Google rankings help with AI answers, but they don't guarantee them. These are the five reasons we see most.
Google ranks pages. Assistants build answers, and for recommendation questions they often lean on review sites, directories and comparison articles more than on suppliers' own pages. You can rank well and still be missing from the sources the assistant prefers.
Your rankings may be for informational searches. Buyers asking an assistant use longer, more specific questions, often with company size, industry or location. If none of your pages answer those directly, the assistant has nothing to quote.
A page can rank because it's thorough and still be hard to quote, because the answer sits halfway down. Assistants prefer pages where the answer comes first, in a few sentences that stand on their own.
Google is forgiving about an old address on a directory. An assistant trying to describe you is less forgiving. Mismatched descriptions make it hedge or leave you out.
Some sites block AI crawlers by default through CDN settings, without anyone realising. Google can still rank you, while ChatGPT and Perplexity can't read your pages.
Take your best-ranking page and its main search term. Then write the question a buyer would ask an assistant about the same need, with their company size, industry or location. Compare the two.
| Google search | Assistant question | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | inventory software | best inventory software for a 20-person food distributor in the UK |
| What wins | A strong, relevant page | A specific answer, backed by reviews and articles that name you |
| Your page | Ranks | May not answer the specific question in its opening |
Most of the time the fix is a new or rewritten section that answers the specific question directly, plus work on the sources the assistant cites.
