How to get Perplexity to cite your website
Perplexity shows its sources in every answer. What it tends to cite, how to make your pages citable, and how to track which of your URLs it uses.

Rank on Google
Blue links, snippets and maps — and the base layer AI reads from.
Named by assistants
Cited in the answers ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot give.
Synthesised by AI
The source Google AI Overviews and Gemini build their answer from.
One shared foundation: crawlable, structured, trustworthy content — run as a single program.
Perplexity is the most transparent of the AI answer engines. It searches the web for almost every question and shows numbered citations next to the answer. That makes it a useful place to start: you can see exactly which pages it trusts for your topic, and test whether your changes work.
Perplexity uses PerplexityBot to index pages and Perplexity-User to fetch a page when a user asks about it. Make sure neither is blocked in robots.txt or by your CDN's bot settings.
Ask Perplexity your buyer questions and open every cited page. Note what they have in common: length, structure, how quickly they answer, whether they include numbers or examples, how recently they were updated. Your page needs to be at least as useful as the ones already winning.
Choose one question per page. Answer it in the first two or three sentences, then go deeper with specifics: steps, examples, a table, your own numbers. Avoid padding. Perplexity quotes short passages, so each section should make sense on its own.
Update your most important pages on a schedule and change the date only when you have changed something real. An honest "updated" date on a genuinely improved page is one of the simplest signals you can give.
For questions like "who is the best agency for X", Perplexity often cites discussion threads. Helpful, openly disclosed answers from someone at your company, posted where buyers already ask, can earn citations over time. Posting the same promotional message everywhere does the opposite.
Keep a simple sheet: question, date, whether your domain was cited, which URL, and which competitors were cited. Re-run it weekly. In analytics, look for referrals from perplexity.ai. Because Perplexity shows sources openly, it is often where you'll first see proof that your work is paying off.
Here is an illustration, not a client story. Picture a software company's page on "how to choose inventory software": 2,500 words of general advice, with the useful part in the middle. Perplexity cites three other pages for that question instead.
The rewrite answers the question in the first three sentences, adds a short table comparing the options by company size, shows when the page was last reviewed, and moves the general background lower down. The page stays the same length, just organised around the answer. That is the shape of page Perplexity tends to cite, and the change is quick to test: re-run the question a few weeks after the page is re-crawled.
