Why doesn't ChatGPT know my company? Seven causes and the fix for each

ChatGPT says it has no information about your company, or describes it wrongly. The seven most common causes and what to do about each one.

You ask ChatGPT about your company and it says it can't find much, or it mixes you up with someone else. That's frustrating, and it is also fixable. In our experience the cause is almost always one of the seven below, and most companies have more than one.

How ChatGPT learns about a company

ChatGPT knows about you in two ways. It may have learned about you during training, from pages published before its cut-off date. Or it may look you up live, using web search, when someone asks. A young company often has no training-data presence at all, so everything depends on the live lookup working well.

1. You're too new for its training data

If your company or domain is younger than the model's training cut-off, the model simply never saw you. Nothing you do today changes that until a new model is released. What you can control is the live search, so the rest of this list matters more for new companies.

2. Its crawlers are blocked

Check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot, and check any "block AI bots" setting in your CDN. A blocked crawler means ChatGPT can't read your pages even when it searches for you.

3. Your name is ambiguous

If your company name is also a common word, a place or another company's name, the model may not know which one you mean. Use your full name with a descriptor in key places, such as "Acme Analytics, a supply-chain software company", and make sure your site's Organization schema includes your official name, URL, logo and profiles.

4. Your site doesn't say what you do

Many homepages lead with a slogan and never state the plain facts. Put them in text near the top: what you sell, who for, where, and since when. A model can only repeat what it can find written down.

5. Nobody else mentions you

A company that exists only on its own website looks thin to a model. Profiles on LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata and relevant directories, plus a few genuine reviews or press mentions, give it independent confirmation that you are real and what you do.

6. Your details disagree across the web

Different addresses, old product names or conflicting descriptions make the model hedge. Search your company name and fix every profile that doesn't match your current description.

7. Bing doesn't have your pages

Because ChatGPT search has drawn on Bing's results, a site that is missing from Bing can be hard for it to find. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and check how many pages Bing has indexed.

A quick diagnosis in 30 minutes

  1. 1Ask ChatGPT, with search on, "What is [company] ([domain])?" and note what it gets right and wrong.
  2. 2Check robots.txt and your CDN for blocked AI crawlers.
  3. 3Search Bing for site:yourdomain.com and see how many pages appear.
  4. 4Search your company name on Google and list every profile that describes you.
  5. 5Compare those descriptions and write down every mismatch.

What to fix first if you only have a day

FixTimeEffect
Unblock OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBotUnder an hourChatGPT can read your pages when it searches
One plain sentence about what you do, at the top of the homepageAn hourGives the model a fact to repeat
Organization structured data with name, URL, logo and profiles1 to 2 hoursConnects your name to your site and profiles
Match your description on LinkedIn and your main directories2 to 3 hoursRemoves conflicting versions of you
Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemapUnder an hourMakes your pages easier to find for search-based answers

None of these needs a developer for more than a few minutes, and together they remove the most common reasons ChatGPT can't find or describe a company.

Fix the blocks and mismatches first, because they are quick. Then work on mentions, which take longer. If you want this done as a project, our LLM SEO work starts with exactly this check.

Frequently asked questions

How long until ChatGPT knows my company?
If its live search can find and read your pages, answers can improve within days or weeks of fixing access and clarity. What the model knows without searching only changes with a new model version, which can take months.
Can I submit my company to ChatGPT?
There is no form for adding a company to ChatGPT's knowledge. You make yourself findable: open crawler access, clear facts on your site, consistent profiles and mentions on independent sites.
ChatGPT describes my company wrongly. What should I do?
Find where the wrong fact comes from, usually an old profile, directory or article, and correct it at the source. Then make sure your own site states the right fact clearly.
Does ChatGPT know about small companies?
Often not from training alone. With search on, it can find small companies whose sites are open to its crawlers, state their facts plainly and are confirmed by a few independent profiles or reviews.
